Menopause and Women's Health

Menopause, typically occurring between the ages of 47 and 55, is a natural part of a woman's life.  While menopause can be both emotionally and physically challenging, many women welcome the changes menopause brings.

Symptoms of menopause begin when estrogen levels begin to change, and the first symptoms of menopause are often hot flashes – quick changes in body temperature – and frequent mood swings.

Women should discuss whether and how to treat menopause symptoms with their doctors.  Women should be evaluated for their risk of conditions that can follow menopause, including heart disease and osteoporosis.  Hormone therapy can relieve the symptoms of menopause, but can increase the risk of breast cancer.  Complementary and alternative medicines are also available to treat menopause symptoms.
