Hormones play an integral role in men's health by helping regulate reproduction, metabolism, and many other functions. When an endocrine gland produces too much or too little of a hormone, men may experience health problems such as erectile dysfunction and reduced fertility, both of which are common symptoms of androgen deficiency syndromes.
Men with an androgen deficiency have decreased levels of testosterone, the main male sex hormone, which can cause erectile dysfunction, infertility and a drop in sex drive. High amounts of prolactin or abnormal thyroid hormone levels are additional hormonal causes of erectile dysfunction. There are many other reasons for infertility and erectile dysfunction, but many men find that maintaining optimal testosterone levels can increase their sperm count and improve their ability to have an erection.
Testosterone is also an important hormone for supporting bone density and muscle mass. Therefore, doctors may prescribe testosterone therapy for adult men experiencing common symptoms of androgen deficiency syndromes.
Besides testosterone therapy, other hormonal treatments help with common male health concerns. For example, men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate have hormonal treatment options to improve urinary flow.
